Visual merchandising, or food merchandising, is an essential part of the food retail and foodservice industry. Foodservice and food retail operators have direct control over the five elements of merchandising: color, landscape, texture, communication and décor. As such, visual merchandisers can make these aspects work together to influence consumer interest and help persuade shoppers to purchase certain products.
The best visual merchandising displays will capture the attention of the consumer and translate into increased sales. It grasps consumer interest with creative visual merchandising design and pushes the product with the right quantity and quality of information.
A proper display has its own theme, which should be easily understood through the five elements of merchandising. The ultimate goal of visual merchandising is to turn passive lookers into active buyers. Buying decisions are made three to four feet away from a display, so the visual merchandising must be impactful enough from a distance to draw in the consumer.
In order to create effective visual merchandising displays, the five elements need to work in conjunction with one another.
