Sustainability has become a big issue in recent years. Though you may recognize this and practice it at your retail food venue, it may be time to reconfigure your food merchandising and consider new products.
Chances are, your current food display fixtures have seen many years of service. Given the retail environment and the fact that spills are commonplace in retail food venues, they probably need to be replaced soon.
Invest in sustainability
Whenever you work toward meeting consumer demands, feature the news prominently. For commercial kitchen equipment and store fixtures, a short update on your store's website and social media pages will suffice. However, for food items that consumers can get their hands on and enjoy, an ad in the local newspaper may be in order.
If you want to get started on saving the environment but aren't sure how, here are three tips.
- Purchase new fixtures: This doesn't mean replacing all the fixtures at the venue. Ones that show a lot of wear and tear can be replaced with new, sustainable items. Taking full advantage of this may require some moving around. After all, a natural wood shelf would look better and hold more significance in the dried fruits and nuts aisle than the soda aisle. Even small touches such as wooden sign frames instead of metal ones will be noted by frequent customers and appreciated by new visitors.
- Invest in sustainable food service items: Plastic foam containers are starting to become a thing of the past. Even coffee giant Dunkin' Donuts, known for its hallmark plastic foam cups are phasing the unsustainable items out, according to the Boston Globe. If your venue has been using plastic foam, consider following in the coffee shop's footsteps and opting for paper or biodegradable plastic containers. This has the added bonus of capturing consumer attention right away, since diners handle these items directly and even bring them home.
- Look for local suppliers: This will require more planning and collaboration than the previous suggestions, but can have a serious impact on business. If possible, reach out to local farms to see if you can sell their goods. This will definitely show your commitment to consumer interests and the environmental sustainability.
