If you’re looking to cut operational costs, the back room is a great place to start. There are many opportunities to save money on cleaning products and equipment you use on regular basis to keep your facility clean.
As a merchandising manger, I find and test new products every day. We offer our customers a wide selection of equipment and cleaning solutions that are effective and affordable for supermarkets, schools, hotels, restaurants and other food service and retail environments. Here are five items you can save money on in the back room.
Pick up the right broom
If you’ve ever shopped for a broom, you know there are many different kinds. That’s because there are many types of floor surfaces and a variety of environments. When choosing the right broom for the job, it’s often best to consult the person using it. Corn brooms may be available at a lower price, but they do not perform as well in a food service environment. The corn fibers are absorbent and will soak up grease or liquids. Instead, choose synthetic or plastic fiber brooms, which can be washed with an all-purpose cleaner or detergent and will not harbor bacteria.
Another thing to consider is the surface area you are sweeping. A push broom can cover more ground but an angled broom may be necessary to get into corners. By the way, what are you sweeping up? You will need a flagged broom to sweep up small particles like seeds.
Don’t send dollars down the drain
Did you know the type of hand soap you use can have an effect on water use? Some studies indicate that water consumption is 10 percent higher while hand washing with liquid soap. When using liquid soap, you are using more soap than needed to accomplish the job. A foam soap dispenser is a great option to save money. Foam soap dispensers are more efficient, dispensing less product and using less water.

Choose the right drainage mat
If your work area tends to get greasy, you may need one of Hubert’s many kitchen mat options that are grease resistant. Hubert grease resistant mats are offered in a red color while general use mats are offered in black. Grease resistant mats are higher priced than general use floor mats. Meanwhile, a black drainage mat is perfectly suitable behind the bar or other areas where grease is not an issue. Save some money if you don’t need the grease resistant feature.

Select the right cleaners for the job
There are two types of stainless steel cleaner:
- Cleaner, which removes oxidation
- A cleaner with polish, which does both. If you need to both clean and polish your stainless steel surfaces, save money by purchasing a product that does both. You also want to make sure the product you are using is water-based, so it can be safely used on food contact surfaces without being rinsed.

Clean up with Microfiber towels
Microfiber towels are much more effective than cotton towels for cleaning. Microfiber towels are super absorbent and the extremely fine fibers attract dirt particles easily. A cotton towel will absorb up to 70 percent moisture, but microfiber can absorb 98 percent. But
that’s not all! Using microfiber towels can reduce your cleaning product use by 90 percent, which means more savings for you. Microfiber towels can be tossed into the wash and used over and over again, making them much more environmentally friendly than paper towels.
